form als möglichkeit zum dialog / shape as an opportunity for dialogue
beschichtetes styropor / coated styrofoam
in the course of the adaptation and extension of the lower austria nursing home gutenstein, an invited competition for
art in public space took place and the project form was chosen as an opportunity for dialogue.
In therapeutical conversations, various residents of the nursing home – some with moderate and severe dementia –
were encouraged to shape plasticine. narration and form-finding happened simultaneously. in that way, the conversations
held in the nursing home became the centre of form-finding, in which the difficult-to-access inner world of the residents
was creatively transferred to the outside. through this extended possibility of biographical work, emotionally stressful
things are expressed and may thus be integrated in a constructive form of therapy.
the conversations were recorded in cooperation with christoph kolar, a certified nurse who will continue using this method
in the geriatric area. three selected objects were enlarged and installed in the outdoor area of the gutenstein nursing home.
the original models and biographical works are exhibited in a glass showcase in the foyer of the home.

biographical work on the video
mrs erna k. * is 73 years old, suffers from alzheimer dementia stage 2.
conversation revealed some information about her past and facts which strongly influenced her life. she grew
up in good family circumstances, her mother was always cheerful and was given the colour yellow in the object.
her husband she gave the colour red, justifying he was always there for her and very supportive. the form in red
developed while we were talking about her husband’s death. he died of lung cancer at the age of 60
and left her with two sons. the colour orange represents her father; about him she gave no special information.
blue represents her sister; she did not give any special information about her sister either. (not yet determined)
the colour green represents her first born son, who gave her hope and much joy.
he died at the age of only 41 on a ruptured spleen. the deaths of her husband and son still weigh on her today.
during the conversation, mrs k. puts the colours red and green together. the colour purple is supposed to represent
herself. it represents the centre of the object and at the same time is the smallest part of it.
when asked why she represents herself as purple, she says that she no longer sees much meaning in her life.
