change of paradigm: from generational- to memorial site

generational places are characterised by their firm and long-term connection with family histories. histories exist in living, „inhabited“ memories as long as they are part of a communicative process. with the break-up of cultural frames and social contexts, they lose their connection with living actuality and become memories that, as a component of historical „uninhabited“ time, must be enriched with facts for renewed understanding.

this process of historicisation, the paradigm shift from a place of generations to a place of remembrance is realised by the sculptor and conceptual artist robert reszner as an artistic project in his own living and working space.

in 1999, robert reszner acquired the house of the panzenböck family as a living and studio space which had been vacant for years. it integrated living and economic space on a very small area. traditional living structures had been kept unchanged for decades. reszner left the wall of the original entrance area in the new building. this remnant, the „skeleton“, was the subject of the exhibition “ concrete 9:52 pm“, which took place in reszner’s garage in august 2010. in 2011, with the destruction of this last fragment of space and its replacement by a glass wall, the second part of the exhibition project entitled „im licht“ (in the light) saw a paradigm shift: the history of the panzenböck family survives reconstructively in a documentation on a studio wall, simultaneously as a monument and paradigm of the artistic work process.
